They had been wooven on the loom in a technique called Sumak producing the various hexagonal and hook motifs of the side and end panels as well as the tapestry-woven bottom. Sometimes, wool loops were sewn into the top edged of the bag so it could be fastened by straps to camels. When the nomads who used the bags were encamped in their tents, the bedding that the bags contained could be removed and the bag hung on the walls of the tent.
